Healthy Habits for Clear & Happy Skin

We all have our own skincare routine that we swear by, but the true secret behind a flawless and healthy complexion lies in diligently building and keeping up with good habits. 

Here are some of my favorite healthy habits for clear & happy skin!

1. Wash Your Face 2x A Day

Just washing your face once a day (or every other day) isn’t going to cut it. Both when you wake up and before you go to bed, it is essential to cleanse your face. In the AM, keeping to your skincare routine is a great way to wake up and prep your skin for the day. It removes the oil buildup from overnight and gives you a clean face before applying makeup. And in the PM, before you hit the sheets you MUST wipe off and wash away all the makeup, dirt and pollution from the day. Nighttime is when your skin gets to recover and repair, so make sure those pores are clean! Even when you are tired, this is an important step to having regularly clear skin.

2. Eat a Balanced Diet

Eating right is not only important for keeping your body functioning smoothly and maintaining your weight. It also helps to maintain clear skin! When your diet is loaded with sugary foods and drinks, processed carbs, and alcohol, it increases your blood sugar and can set off a hormonal domino effect that triggers acne and breakouts. Instead, incorporate healthy choices like dark leafy greens, fruits, and grains that are loaded with antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.

Keep a refillable water bottle or glass with you at all times! It can be so easy to forget to drink water on the regular, but by not drinking your daily 64 oz, it can result in dull, flaky skin. Water helps to flush the toxins out of your body, keeps the skin supple, and is extremely beneficial for the digestive system.

4. Clean your Pillowcase & Sheets Regularly

When was the last time you swapped your pillowcase for a clean one? If you aren’t doing this every week, you are laying your head on a breeding ground for germs every night. Don’t let all this bacteria come into contact with your skin when you lay down your head to snooze, and instead clean them on the regular! This also goes for towels that you use to wipe your face!

5. Exfoliate Once A Week

Exfoliating your skin every week (or more!) is a great way to slough off dead skin cells, excess sebum, and dirt that has become trapped in your pores over the course of the week. Helping to purge the skin of impurities, when you regularly exfoliate, your skin will feel smoother and look clearer.

6. Prioritize Moisturizer 

Although it sounds counterintuitive, moisturizers help keep your skin from drying out and overproducing oils. When your skin overproduces, the excess oils can clog your pores and result in acne and hormonal breakouts. Moisturizing keeps the skin looking plump, dewy, and radiant – plus it helps prevent signs of aging!

When your skin is exposed to the sun’s UV rays, it can cause a multitude of problems. Sunspots, freckles, hyperpigmentation, and dried-out skin – don’t let too much sun cause issues on your skin’s surface. Instead, apply sunscreen every morning to protect and keep your skin glowing, clear, and healthy.
