How To Get pH Balanced Skin for a Healthy, Clear Complexion
c
Let’s face it, our skin is exposed to a lot of substances on a daily basis. There are environmental factors like sun exposure and dry winds. Then there are skincare and makeup products that sit on the skin and soak into our pores every day. Even the food we eat has an impact on our complexion!
Our faces deal with over-cleansing, under-moisturizing, harsh exfoliating and so much more. And all of these factors can disrupt our skin’s most precious balance – it’s pH level.
Our skin’s pH is one of the most important factors in maintaining a beautiful and clear complexion. When our skin is at its healthiest it is slightly acidic, at around a pH of 5.5. But when we constantly disrupt our skin’s optimal pH it can look unhealthy, dry, or oily – no matter what you do to try and cover it up.
What is pH?
pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of any aqueous solution (which includes our skin!). It is measured on a scale ranging from 0 to 14, with 0 being the most acidic, and 14 being the most alkaline. Neutral lays right in the middle as a 7, and is the pH of pure water.
When substances with a different pH level come into contact with your skin, those substances affect your own pH balance. Even a mild soap can have a pH balance of 9 or 10, (that’s a million times the alkaline level of your skin!).
How Balanced pH Gives You Healthy Skin
When your pH balance is out of alignment, you can face skincare issues such as wrinkles, sensitivity, inflammation, acne, and so much more.
Basically, if your skin pH level falls over 7 on the alkaline side, it will tend to look drier and more wrinkly, while skin falling too low on the acidic side will tend to be red, irritated and itchy.
However, when your pH levels are optimal, that can result in clean, beautiful skin. Balanced pH levels can help you with:
- Losing the dry and flakiness, and replacing it with naturally hydrated skin
- Obtaining smooth skin by enhancing our natural exfoliating process
- Slowing down skin aging and the addition of wrinkles and fine lines
- Protecting against bacterial and fungal infections (we’re talking about you, acne!)
- And a stronger skin barrier leading to less sensitive skin
How To Get pH Balanced Skin
The skin can naturally bring its pH back into balance, but it will never do that if you are constantly using products that are causing its disruption.
Instead, treating our skin with products that support and balance our skin’s health is essential in speeding up the process and getting that beautiful, glowing complexion.
Oil Cleansers, like our Papaya Fuse Cleansing Oil, are absolutely perfect for maintaining our skin’s pH levels. As oil cleansers have no water contained in them, there’s no measure of their pH level. Though that might sound counterintuitive, that actually makes them perfect to use as they won’t disturb your skin’s pH level whatsoever.
Other products like witch hazel, rosewater, and apple cider vinegar have proven to be great for pH balanced skin, and are all ingredients you can mix into a clay face mask, like Rose Veil, to max the benefits to your skin.
pH balancing skincare is key to healthy looking skin.
